The orange is an edible citrus fruit obtained from sweet orange tree (Citrus × sinensis), ancient Asian hybrid originally from India, Vietnam or southern China. It is a fleshy hesperidium with a thick and hardened cover and the pulp is typically formed of 11 segments filled with juice. This contains a lot of vitamin C, flavonoids and essential oils.
It is smaller and sweeter than grapefruit, and larger but less fragrant than tangerine. There are numerous varieties of oranges, with most hybrids produced from the maximum citrus, citrus reticulata (tangerine) and citrus medica (citron) species.
Orange is one of the most consumed fruits worldwide. It is grown in regions of warm and humid climate and some say that a daily intake helps prevent arteriosclerosis. The fruit of Citrus sinensis is called sweet orange to distinguish it from Citrus aurantium, the bitter orange.
